Answers to Your Balayage Questions

Wondering if a balayage is right for you? This hand painted technique has quite a few advantages over traditional highlighting methods. Below we are answering the balayage questions most frequently asked by our clients.

What is Balayage?

Balayage, which translates to “sweeping”, is a French technique that uses a freehand method to create natural, sun-kissed highlights and adds dimension.

This alternative to traditional highlights has many advantages. Here are a few:

  • It often requires less maintenance due to its less structured method of application – meaning you may be able to go longer between salon touch-ups
  • Root grow-out is less noticeable with no harsh lines of demarcation
  • It often results in a softer, more natural-looking effect while still boasting a ton of depth and dimension

Frequently Asked Questions About Balayage

How long does a balayage service take?

A balayage service typically takes 2-4 hours depending on the length and texture of your hair, as well as your desired look.

How is balayage different from traditional highlighting?

When it comes to deciding between a balayage and traditional highlights, it really comes down to personal preference with regards to your desired look and maintenance level. There are quite a few differences between the two. While both can give your hair dimension, a balayage often provides a softer, more natural-looking effect than highlights which are more precise and structured. Advantages of a balayage include less maintenance and less noticeable root grow-out due to its freehand painting technique. Highlights follow a more traditional technique creating a more noticeable line of regrowth requiring more frequent maintenance appointments.

How long do the results of a balayage typically last?

On average, balayage results typically last 8-12 weeks. The length of time however will depend on several factors including your hair’s natural growth rate, your hair care routine, and desired results. A balayage is perhaps best known for its low maintenance upkeep. Because root regrowth is less noticeable with a balayage than with traditional highlights, you can safely push your hair appointment out a bit longer.

Can a balayage damage my hair?

Like with any lightening service, there is the potential for damage. When done correctly however, a balayage is generally considered gentler on the hair than other methods. Balayage’s hand-painting technique can minimize overlapping of previously lightened hair subsequently reducing the potential for damage. As with any color service however, a balayage does still involve chemical processing. While a skilled stylist can help to avoid the potential for damage, you’ll want to do your part as well with nourishing shampoos, conditioners, and regular hair masks. We also highly recommend a bond builder during any lightening service to protect the integrity of your hair.

Can I achieve a dramatic appearance with a balayage?

Yes! A dramatic appearance is achievable however, depending on your current hair color and desired look, it may require more time during your initial service or multiple sessions to achieve your hair goals. While a dramatic appearance is achievable, a more gradual approach to maintain the integrity of your hair should be considered. Whether it’s a dramatic look or subtle dimension, your stylist can help you map out a plan.

How should I care for my hair after getting a balayage?

One of the most important things you can do to protect your new look is to nourish and moisturize your hair with a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and conditioner. Bonus points for adding a weekly deep conditioning treatment or hair mask to your routine! Other tips for radiant, long-lasting color? Use a heat protectant, minimize the excessive use of hot tools, and avoid washing your hair too frequently.

Tips for Balayage Success

Schedule a Complimentary Consultation

A complimentary consultation with your stylist will allow you to communicate your vision, hair routine, and lifestyle. Your stylist can then create a plan that best suits you and achieves your desired results.

Be Patient

Achieving your desired effect may require more time or multiple sessions to maintain the integrity of your hair. Don’t rush the process!

Give Your Hair Some Post-Service TLC

Be sure to invest in hair products designed for color treated hair, including a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and conditioner. A weekly hydrating hair mask will also go a long way in keeping your hair healthy. Other steps you should take include protecting your hair from heat (from both the sun and hot tools) and only washing your hair 2-3 times per week.

Commit to Regular Maintenance

While balayage grows out gracefully, maintaining regular appointments will keep your hair looking fresh. Your stylist can help you create a maintenance plan that fits your desired look, time constraints, and budget.
